Jeffrey Loria of the Marlins has sounded off today regarding what clearly seems to be a deep-seated bitterness about his experiences with Joe Girardi at the helm of his ballclub. This raises some interesting questions about his managerial style, and the impact he’s likely to have on the Yankees.
Much has been made of the big changes we’re seeing in the running of the team (literally!), with focus on methods such as the extra running this Spring. While you’ll always get those who will say that players should be ‘babied’ and brought along slowly, I’m a firm believer that the new methods we’re seeing will pay off for the team in the long run – I’d go as far as to put my house on the prediction that we won’t see a spate of hamstring injuries like the ridiculous number we saw early last season.
Interestingly, Mark Feinsand in today’s Daily News has an excellent piece on how Girardi has developed his managerial style (See it here – If you’ve not seen it yet I can recommend it – well worth a read).
As for Loria’s moaning, again, while there will be some that will be terrified that this will be the beginnings of Joe G ruining our young three arms, I’m far more wary of believing anything said by an owner who has asset stripped two potential-filled World Series winning teams in the last decade alone. Can he really be considered a reliable judge of either management or player talent when his running of his own ballclub is so blinkered by a preoccupation with cutting costs at all levels?
