I was delighted to hear that Andy Pettitte’s inside pitch to Ortiz yesterday was fully intentional, and hopefully indicative of a change in attitude by the Yankees pitchers. The way hitters like Ortiz have shadowed and dominated the inner half of the plate, and by and large been left to get as comfortable in the batters’ box as they like has really frustrated me over the past few years.
I’m not suggesting that the pitchers should go out of their way to hit batters, but pitchers need to be able to dominate the whole of the plate – it’s small enough as it is for their purposes! Hopefully Andy won’t be the only one looking to re-establish his control of the whole plate under the new regime, and hopefully the way Ortiz was handled yesterday will be a sign of things to come for sluggers like him who have killed us in recent seasons!
On another note – I’ll have to apologise for my ridiculous lack of blogging recently! It’s been a hell of a hectic time at university over the last couple of weeks, but now it’s slowing off a bit, I’ll be able to focus my attention on more important things, like the upcoming season!
