Yankee notes

April 13, 2008

Brian Bruney is looking awesome this year, which is a testament to his new physical condition. In 5 games he has piched 7 scoreless innings, striking out 9 while only allowing 5 baserunners. A pat on the back should go to Joe Girardi for calling some players in the offseason to tell them to report in better shape. Hopefully these players will also benefit from being in superior condition in the latter stages of the season.

Jose Molina is a demon with the bat – his .345 average leads the Yankees regulars and he also tops the list for doubles this year with 6. His defense is also a weapon that’s helping us on a daily basis.

Chien Ming Wang is great. Period! The fact he is underrated may eventually help the Yankees when it comes to negotiating a contract.

The pitching has been a big surprise all in all. In the cases of Bruney, Traber, Mussina and Ohlendorf it’s been a welcome surprise. Hawkins and Kennedy, not so much.

At what point does Giambi start to ride the pine? Maybe Posada could see some time at 1st this season – especially if Molina keeps hitting and continues to control the pitching staff the way he has been – 3.51 ERA, 4th best in the AL, 8th best in MLB. Maybe Morgan Ensberg deserves a better look at 1st too?

A 6-6 start is hardly awe-inspiring but it’s a damn site better than how we’ve started most of our recent seasons. As an internal optimist(my co-blogger may disagree with that), i can see a nice winning streak just around the corner. Right now though, i’m really enjoying winning games with the pitching being our strength. It’s in stark contrast to the 9-7’s and 12-10’s we’ve become accustomed to seeing.

With 1st pitch at 8:05ET(1:05am over here) i’ll be looking forwaard to about 30 minutes of sleep before my 6am start at work. Lucky me!!! Still, it’s against Boston, so it has to be done.
